Dead Horse Point State Park
Scorching Hot Desert Sunset Talk
September 1
7:00 PM 

Cool off with one of our rangers while we talk about the harshness of the desert and what animals, plants, and humans must do to survive. Meet our ranger by the bathrooms at the Dead Horse Point Overlook at 7:00 PM. We will be walking a little way down the west rim trail. You are welcome to bring chairs or blankets to sit on.

UMFA in the Wild | Make a Nature Rubbing Book

Join the UMFA in Utah’s amazing wilderness to experience nature and make art. Learn about the variety of textures in nature and how artists represent them in paintings and drawings. Construct your own book to classify and record rubbings of the natural textures around you.

Geology Rocks! Sunset Talk

Sunset can be a spectacular time to come and view what the park has to offer. Watch the sunset and while you do a ranger will talk to you about what makes this one of the most photographed places in the world. Meet by the bathrooms at the Dead Horse Point Overlook at 7:00 PM. Did you know that scorpions glow under UV light? Come on an adventure with one of our rangers as we try to spot these amazing creatures. We will have some UV lights for you to use, but you are welcome to bring your own. Please wear appropriate footwear—preferably closed-toe shoes. We will be meeting at the mountain bike parking lot next to the Moenkopi Yurts at 8:30 PM.

Goblin Valley is an International Dark Sky Park, with little to no light pollution. Come join us and learn about the importance of dark skies and enjoy a showing of Jupiter and Saturn.

Discover the essence of Utah’s arts and heritage at the Old Capitol Arts & Living History Festival! Originating two decades ago, this event celebrates creativity in the heart of Fillmore. Hosted at the scenic Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum, with its charming Old Capitol backdrop and easy I-15 access, the festival’s roots were sown with artist booths.

Boasting 50 artisan stalls, dual stages hosting continuous high-quality performances, historical reenactors, fine art and quilt displays, interactive children’s activities, horse-drawn wagon rides, and a medley of food options, the festival mirrors its theme – “The Pioneering Spirit.” You won’t want to miss this vibrant celebration!

Join the Ogden Astronomical Society for an evening of sun and star gazing.  Safely look at our sun through telescopes, then distant objects in our universe after sunset.  This is a public, come-and-go-as-you-wish event.

Camp Floyd State Park

Camp Floyd State Park proudly presents Camp Floyd Days, commemorating the establishment of Camp Floyd in Fairfield on its anniversary weekend. This extraordinary event invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the vibrant history of camp life through captivating exhibits and engaging demonstrations.

Explore the resting places of the valiant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Children have the opportunity to engage in educational military drills using toy muskets and don period-authentic uniforms, immersing themselves in history. Wander through encampments brought to life by both civilian and military re-enactors, and participate in games that harken back to that era. Delve into the past as you peruse a collection of artifacts from the occupation period (1858-1861) of Camp Floyd, showcased within our museum. Additionally, take a captivating tour of the historic Stagecoach Inn, which held its doors open from 1858 to 1947, offering a glimpse into a bygone era that shaped our heritage.

Discover a universe of wonder at Camp Floyd State Park’s star party, presented in partnership with the Utah Valley Astronomy Club. Girl Scouts Love State Parks!

Cool off with one of our rangers while we talk about the harshness of the desert and what animals, plants, and humans must do to survive. This talk will take place either on the observation deck of the visitor center or on the second floor of the visitor center. Participants will get a 10% discount on an ice cream or cold drink from our gift shop to help them survive the desert heat. The talk will start at 10:00 AM. Embark on a journey into the past with an engaging Ranger talk, delving into the intriguing lives of early settlers. Then, immerse yourself in the pioneer experience with culinary tutorials showcasing the creation of authentic Pioneer dishes. These tutorials will take place at 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM.  Games will be available for play between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Find us at the lawn area for games and under the Pavilion for food fun. Entry is just $1 per person plus a $5 vehicle fee. Leashed dogs are welcome too! Don’t miss out on this historic and delicious day.

Basin and Range at Antelope Island

Come learn about Basin and Range geography, and how Antelope Island fits into Utah’s Basin and Range! We’ll do some basin and range movement activities (optional, low physical exertion), and draw a basin and range system to solve a fault-line mystery! This activity is appropriate for kids ages 6 and up.

We’ll meet outdoors at Buffalo Point. This activity lasts 30 minutes, with time for questions after.

Campfire Stories
September 15 & 22 – Group Fire Pit

Join us for an evening of captivating tales, camaraderie, and campfire coziness! Let our friendly Park Ranger tell you the Myths and Legends that surround the Great Salt Lake. This session covers the same mesmerizing stories as our October Full Moon Walk.

As dusk sets in, find your spot by the fire from 5:30 PM onward. Once everyone’s comfortably seated, the enchanting stories will begin. Remember to bring your camp chair, and don’t forget your flashlight (though we’ll use them sparingly). Feel free to bring your leashed furry friends along for the adventure!

Bring your favorite camp chair for comfort. A flashlight will come in handy (although we’ll dim them for a cozy atmosphere). Bug spray is recommended for added comfort. Additionally, you’re welcome to bring supplies for s’mores to enjoy during the storytelling.

International Coastal Cleanup Day

Join us on Saturday, September 16 for International Coastal Cleanup 2023! Volunteers will remove trash along Great Salt Lake’s shores and tributaries to restore critical wildlife habitat and improve water quality.

Please wear clothes you can get dirty, shoes appropriate for mud and sand, and pack a rain jacket. Gloves, trash bags, and other cleanup supplies will be provided.

Fairfield Historical Sites Driving Tour

Come and join Camp Floyd State Park staff at 10:00 AM for a driving tour of the Fairfield train station site, sheep shearing site, and Manning Canyon Mining Smelter site. Learn about early Camp Floyd, Fairfield, sheep, and the mining history of the area. Admission fees are $10 per person. Reservations are required. A high-clearance vehicle is necessary for the tour as we will be driving on dirt roads. The tour will last approximately 1-1.5 hours. Great Salt Lake State Park
Full Moon Walk

Observation Deck

Join one of our friendly park rangers for a leisurely stroll at Silver Sands Beach just as the sun begins to set. With each walk centered around a different fascinating topic, you’ll discover the hidden wonders of the area in a whole new light.

As the sun bids its goodbye, get ready to greet the rising moon over the Great Salt Lake. Its gentle glow will dance on the water, creating a breathtaking scene that’s both calming and awe-inspiring.

The event costs $3 per person plus the $5 day-use pass for your vehicle to enter the park. Leashed dogs are more than welcome to join the adventure! Registration is required. Due to space limitations, we’re keeping each tour to a maximum of 100 participants. Secure your spot by registering ahead of time.

We’ll kick things off at the Observation Deck, which is a short walk past the Visitor’s Center. The walk covers a relaxed half-mile on mostly flat terrain. For your comfort, it’s a good idea to pack flashlights (we won’t use them too much), bug spray to keep those pesky critters away, and waterproof shoes if you’re up for beach exploration. Dress appropriately for the weather, and you’re all set for a fantastic evening!

Please be aware that the event might be canceled due to inclement weather. We’ll be at the Great Salt Lake Marina in Magna (Exit 104, off I-80), not on Antelope Island.
