Off Highway Vehicle Requirements

Registration

All Off-Highway Vehicles must be registered including non-resident visitors. You are required to have proof of registration on the OHV. OHV’s must remain on designated routes only and no cross-country riding is permitted.

Education

Utah law requires all operators to complete an online education course prior to operating in the state. Operators must have their education card or proof thereof while recreating on public lands. Click the links below to complete the course. Adults 18 + education and Youth education.

Anyone under the age of 18 must wear a DOT approved helmet. Bicycle helmets do not meet the DOT requirements for appropriate head gear on an OHV.

Who can Operate? 

OHV: The individual that is operating the OHV must be able to comfortably reach and operate each control necessary to safely operate the OHV. If you do not possess a valid drivers license and are under the age of 18 then you must be supervised by a: (1) person who has a valid drivers license, (2) must be at least 18 years of age or older and (3) remain within 300 feet of them while operating an OHV.

What OHV’s Are Legal?

Street Legal OHV’s can not operate on any interstate or divided highway in the state and can not exceed 55 MPH even if the designated roadway is posted greater than 55 MPH. Utah residents need to go through the Department of Motor Vehicles for registration, while Non-residents can click on the link and get their vehicles registered.

Non street legal OHV’s are legal to operate on park, county and BLM roads near the park as long as they are registered and all traffic laws are followed.

Gear

It is recommended to wear over-the-ankle boots(dirt bikes), pants, goggles, gloves, and long sleeves. On dirt bikes, it is also recommended to wear an exoskeleton: this includes chest, knee, and elbow pads for protection.
