KANAB, Utah — A Colorado man has died after an off-highway vehicle accident at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

On Saturday, 23-year-old Abel Ocampo from Denver, Colorado, was camping at the state park with friends and family. Just after 4 p.m., Ocampo was driving a rented side-by-side vehicle in dunes when he lost control, resulting in a rollover accident.

Those nearby promptly called for help and attempted to extract Ocampo from the overturned vehicle. First responders from the Utah Division of State Parks, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and Kane County Ambulance arrived shortly after and attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, Ocampo was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

There was one passenger in the vehicle, who sustained minor injuries. One of the witnesses, who assisted in lifting the machine, sustained leg injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Ocampo was not wearing a helmet or a seatbelt at the time of the accident. This incident remains under investigation at this time.

The Utah Division of State Parks would like to extend our condolences to Abel Ocampo’s family and friends. We would also like to thank the agencies and individuals who swiftly responded to the incident.

With the holiday weekend now underway, the Utah Division of State Parks encourages all outdoor recreators to prioritize safety. Always recreate with a buddy, wear your life jackets and helmets, and let somebody know where you are going and when to expect your return. Checking weather conditions and water temperatures is also vital. Use alcohol responsibly, and never drink while driving an off-highway vehicle, operating a boat, or participating in potentially dangerous activities. Pack appropriate gear for your activity and stay hydrated while outdoors.
