Ironman World Championship Impacts at Washington County State Parks

WASHINGTON CITY, Utah — The Utah Division of State Parks is excited to welcome the Ironman World Championships to Southern Utah!

The race will take place on May 7, and will pass through two different state parks — Sand Hollow State Park and Snow Canyon State Park. Due to the large scale of this race, local roadways are expected to be significantly impacted during this time. Visitors can expect closures or possible delays at all four Washington County state parks. Here is what you need to know before getting on the road.


Sand Hollow State Park

Sand Hollow State Park will be the state park that is most significantly impacted by the Ironman World Championships event. The race start, swimming portion, and the beginning portion of the cycling leg of the race will both be housed at this location.

May 1-5: North Boat Ramp Parking Lot Closed. South Boat Ramp & South Beach Open. Day-use and camping open as well.
May 6: Full Park Closure
May 7: Full Park Closure

Snow Canyon State Park

May 7: Snow Canyon Drive through Snow Canyon State Park will be closed from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. to accommodate the cycling portion of this event. Campers will need to leave the campground by 7:50 a.m., otherwise you will not be allowed to exit the campground and access Snow Canyon Drive until after the completion of the race.  Day-use visitors and incoming campers will not be able to access the park until after 6 p.m.

Gunlock State Park

May 7: Gunlock State Park will remain open on race day. However, visitors can expect significant delays due to local area road closures. Traffic will only be allowed southbound on Gunlock Road on the day of the race.
