Many disabled veterans will soon get free State Parks access

(KUTV) For Utah State Parks Director Fred Hayes, it has been a challenging year. For legal reasons, he was forced to do away with a program that granted many disabled veterans access to state parks at a steep discount.

The move came as a blow to disabled veterans like Bob Hicks. Hicks told Get Gephardt in February, a year ago, that it was obviously going hurt veterans financially but, perhaps more importantly, he thought it showed a lack of respect by state bureaucrats.

“I think it’s really hurting the veterans and it doesn’t show the veterans that the state really cares about them,” he said.

In the months since, the parks department has been trying to find a balance between granting veterans access to state parks, paying for it and making sure it didn’t fall on gate attendants to determine a veteran’s military service and disability status.
