Texas Man Dead After Falling at Dead Horse Point State Park

DEAD HORSE POINT STATE PARK — A Texas man is dead following an incident at Dead Horse Point State Park Sunday. 

The man, 54-year-old Charles Campassi from Houston, Texas, was visiting the park with family. Around noon, the group was hiking the area near the West Rim Trail when Campassi lost his footing and fell off of the cliff. The group is believed to have been approximately 100 yards off-trail. 

Responders from Utah State Parks, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, and Grand County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist in the search. 

Campassi’s body was recovered at approximately 4 p.m. following the efforts of the Grand County Search and Rescue team. He is believed to have fallen approximately 200 feet. 

The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation extends our deepest condolences to Campassi’s friends and family. We would like to remind visitors to always hike within their experience level, stick to established trails whenever possible, and to exercise caution when exploring areas near cliffsides and steep drops.
