Man Dies Following Incident at Sand Hollow State Park

HURRICANE – A Carbon County man died at the hospital Sunday following an incident at Sand Hollow State Park the previous day.

On Saturday, 21-year-old Nicholas Floyd was swimming at Sand Hollow State Park with friends when he began having trouble staying afloat.  Floyde’s friends attempted to assist him and called for help to a nearby search and rescue vessel.

Search and rescue officials, who were conducting prescheduled training at the time, assisted and were able to retrieve Floyde and bring him onboard their boat where they began emergency medical procedures.

Once onshore, Floyde was transferred to a waiting ambulance and transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. He was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident.

Floyde was taken off of life support Sunday at approximately 4:00-4:30 p.m.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family who have been impacted by this tragedy.

This is the eleventh recreational drowning within Utah this year, and the Division of State Parks and Recreation would like to remind everyone about the importance of wearing a lifejacket when recreating on bodies of water.
