Scofield State Park

Camp, boat and fish at this summer and winter recreation destination situated high in the Manti-La Sal Mountains. Two separate areas offer amenities for day and overnight use. Scofield is a Blue Ribbon Fishery.

2 Campgrounds: Our two campgrounds offer campsites near the reservoir. Mountain View Campground is near the dam and offers incredible views of the lake as it is built on a terrace on the shoreline. Many of these campsites are ideal for smaller trailers or tents. Madsen Bay Campground is on the northern shoreline and has recently been renovated with electric and water utilities. These sites are paved and larger to accommodate current camping trailers.

Summer Activities: During summer, Scofield is popular for water recreation such as fishing, boating and kayaking.

Winter Activities: During winter, ice fish, snowmobile and cross-country ski in a spectacular mountain setting.

Fishing: Scofield is known for producing a variety of trout. Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout and Tiger Trout can be caught from shore or on a boat.

History

Settlers came to Pleasant Valley in the 1870s because of large tracts of grazing land. Scofield was named after General Charles W. Scofield, a timber contractor who became president of the state’s first coal mining company. Mining peaked in the early 1920s when Scofield had 12 stores, 13 saloons, four large hotels, a post office and a population of more than 6,000 residents. Today, less than 100 reside in the town.

The popularity of Scofield Reservoir brings many visitors to the park each year. Summer activities include fishing, camping, hiking and swimming at this reservoir at an elevation of 7,616 feet. During the winter months, Scofield is one of the best places to ice fish for rainbow and cutthroat trout.

Opened to the public as a state park in 1965.
