Our Starry Skies Initiative

Natural dark sky areas are decreasing across the country and around the world. Fortunately, Utah State Parks are home to some of the darkest night skies in North America and we are committed to keeping them that way.

Ten Utah state parks have already earned their official International Dark Sky Park or International Urban Night Sky Placedesignation. Achieving this recognition takes dedicated effort, requiring our staff to carefully manage park lighting, monitor light levels and protect our night environment. It is a detailed process, but it ensures these incredible views remain protected for years to come.

From stargazing programs to unfiltered views of the cosmos, our parks offer a rare window into the universe. Come experience the beauty of a true dark night sky. The sights are otherworldly.

Star Parties

Gather under a blanket of stars to share the wonder of the night sky! Relax as rangers guide you through constellation stories and, at select events, help you spot breathtaking planets through high-powered telescopes.

Recommendations: We suggest warm layers, a cozy chair or blanket, and a red-light flashlight if you have one.

Full Moon Events

Full Moon Walks and Paddles are a favorite event! Stroll quiet trail paths or glide across calm waters on a guided kayak tour to see a whole new side of nature after dark.

Recommendations: We recommend comfortable hiking shoes, water, and a headlamp. For paddling, dress for the water and wear a life jacket.

Scoprion Quest

Set off on a fun night-time search for the park’s hidden wildlife! Using UV black-lights, you'll spot native scorpions glowing like little neon lights in the dark.

Recommendations: We recommend wearing sturdy closed-toe shoes and bringing your own UV flashlight along for the hunt.
