Flight Park Rules

From the UHGPGA Website:

SOUTH SIDE Rules

1.      All Utah State Parks rules and regulation apply and must be followed.

2.      Must be current UHGPGA member for legal liability and site preservation reasons.

3.      Must have a current H-2/P-2 or higher USHGA rating. Students & H-1/P-1's must be under the supervision of an UHGPGA/POMIC approved instructor.

4.      Helmets must be worn.

5.      Paraglider only - Max. Wind speed is 18 mph P-2; 22 mph P-3.

6.      All paragliders launch west of the large (center) windsock and east of the gully.

7.      Always clear traffic and yell, "launching" before taking off and entering the flight pattern

8.      10-minute rule should be used whenever crowded pattern is observed

9.      No take offs or landings with motors on park property.

10.    Please refer to the diagram below for reference for the numbers 11-16.

11.    Flag poles are placed on the South Side ridge.  The center is the  standard flag  on launch, this flag will serve two purposes.   First, this flag separates the Paragliding and Hang Gliding set up areas.  Secondly the color of this flag shall serve as an  informal indicator of conditions.

12.    The east and west flags are the "pattern border flags" one will be just east of the gully (in front of parking area) the second at the west end - as the hill starts to bend and go around to the Pit.  Each should have a bright ribbon and a wind sock on the top.

13.    Any POMIC approved instructor has the right to change the flag color on the main flag (in the launch areas), Green means "general flying" as such, pattern rules MUST BE FOLLOWED!  Acro and sliders are not permitted between the east and west flags.  If you are at the edge of the hill it means you are launching your craft so do so!  Fly the Pattern and land your glider in the proper zone (hang gliders on the East side of the flag, Paragliders on the West).

14.    When a POMIC approved instructor feels the Point is, A) either too crowded or B) conditions are too strong for students the green flag may be switched with a red flag - signifying  no student soaring and P 3 and above recommended.  Pilots remaining in the air must still fly the pattern, but the window is open for discretion flying (acro, sliders, kiting on the edge, etc.)
CAUTION: NEWER AND LESS EXPERIENCED PILOTS SHOULD PROBABLY NOT BE FLYING.  If conditions change, flag color can again change back to green by any POMIC approved instructor.  When Red is out, we ask no student soaring in the general pattern, if it is a strong day and they can soar out front, but caution should be the name of the game", if it becomes sub-soarable, green flag would go out and back to strict soaring rules.

15.    When the green flag is out, advanced pilots can engage in discretion flying while adhering to ridge soaring and right of way rules.  This must occur outside the "pattern flags."  So, advanced pilots fly to the east and west of the border flags, do your  thing, show off, have fun.

16.    BORDERS:  Imagine a box running the length of the South Side ridge 20 feet from the edge of the hill.  This is the launch box.  The launch box is just that, once you are at the edge you are going to launch when the green flag is out.  NO KITING, NO SLIDERS in this area.  If you are at the lip, launch!  If you want to kite on the lip or play around, go to beyond the Pattern Marker flags and do what ever  you want.... Something for everyone!  When the Red Flag goes up you can kite at the lip and play around.  When the Red Flag goes up most beginner and intermediate pilots should be down or heading down.  The center flag separates Hang Gliding area from Paragliding area.  If there are HG's out, DO NOT INVADE THEIR SPACE. The area between the gully and the center flag is off limits for paraglider launching, landing, and kiting.

BE AWARE

  • Flying conditions in summer can be strong. Thermals and turbulence are usually present after 10:00 am.
  • Paraglider only - Flying congestion and rapid shifts in weather change "The Point" from a P-2 to a P-3 site
  • Gliders with streamers are student pilots. Use caution when in close proximity.
  • The irrigation canal to the south of the LZ is extremely dangerous. Avoid landing near it at all costs.
  • There are power lines bordering three sides of the South Side flight park (east, west, north).
  • Follow the rules of the ridge
  • Clear ALL launches, turns and above & below you
  • Be aware that hang gliders, paragliders, speed wings, and radio controlled gliders will be flying in the same air space and in close proximity. Each has a different flying characteristic.
  • Announce your presence when entering space where Radio Controlled gliders are being flown
  • After landing, immediately move your glider out of the field. Pack it in the parking area.

BE AWARE

  • Hang Glider pilots usually launch and turn left then and use thermal lift as well as ridge lift to get up
  • Landing on the bench before 5 PM in the summer can be extremely turbulent
  • Follow the rules of ridge
  • Always clear your launches, turns and above & below you
  • Paragliders, watch for Hang Gliders on final approach - ensure their landing paths is clear.
  • If you get below the bench level, the gullies can produce strong turbulence
  • You are strongly advised to consult local pilots on daily conditions - which can change fast!

Miscellaneous

  • If you have a radio, please USE it, it might save a life (maybe yours!)... "The Points" official radio frequency is 151.955
  • All vehicles must stay on the roads and park in designated areas.
  • "The Point" area is day use only.
  • In case of an emergency, ask for a cell phone to call 911.
  • Please DO NOT LITTER.
  • DO NOT LAND IN THE COMMUNITY PARK NORTH TO THE NORTH SIDE FLIGHT PARK!
  • Please ensure your pets and children are under your direct supervision and NOT left unattended.  Pets must be kept on a leash.  All pet feces must be picked up and properly disposed of.

Rules of the Ridge

  • Always clear your turns. See, Be Seen and Avoid.
  • Do not pin other pilots against the ridge. Leave enough room to turn out from the ridge.
  • In ridge soaring conditions, pass on the right but realize that not everyone will follow this rule.
  • Watch other pilot's posture and movements for clues as to his or her actions and intent.
  • First pilot to enter a thermal establishes turning direction. The lower pilot has the right of way.
  • In ridge soaring conditions, the faster glider overtaking another glider, passes on the inside (ridge side).
  • Please stay in a counter clockwise rotation when ridge soaring. The glider on the right has the right of way. Thermalling should be done outside the ridge soaring pattern.
