Another soggy weekend, what to do?

Soggy weather and chilly temperatures getting you down? Take advantage of the rainy weather and visit a Utah state park museum.

Take a short drive to Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn in Fairfield and learn about this once bustling military camp home to 3,500 troops sent to suppress a rumored Mormon rebellion.

Hunt for dinosaurs at the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal. Explore 22,000 square feet of exhibits including fossils, dinosaurs, and early American Indian history.

A two-hour drive to central Utah takes  you to Fremont Indian State Park and Museum. Discover artifacts, petroglyphs, and pictographs left behind by the Fremont Indians.  Spend a day at the museum, and then camp at nearby Castle Rock Campground.

Other state park museums include Anasazi in Boulder, Edge of the Cedars in Blanding, Territorial Statehouse in Fillmore, and Frontier Homestead in Cedar City.  Each museum provides a glimpse into Utah’s history and the things making our state unique.

PREVENT OHV ACCIDENTS, WATCH FOR HAZARDS

Avoid off-highway vehicle accidents and injuries by looking ahead for hazards on the trail. As a rule of thumb, allow one yard for every mile per hour you are riding. Staying alert and focused helps riders select the best route, avoiding danger and allowing time to slow down if necessary.

Current reservoir conditions- May 16

Reservoirs are full or will be filling as temperatures warm and run-off increases.  I fished below Jordanelle Reservoir over the weekend and the river was fast, full, and freezing! If you’re heading out this week, plan for chilly water temperatures, quick changing weather conditions, and most importantly, wear your life jacket!

Watch out for boating hazards!

With higher than normal spring runoff levels expected this year, boaters need to be prepared for underwater and floating hazards.

Lookout for the following when enjoying your local waters:

  • Floating debris such as trees, branches and garbage are swept up by rivers and carried into lakes and reservoirs.
  • Deadheads, also called sinker logs, can damage or destroy
boats if hit at high speed. Deadheads are almost impossible to see as they usually float with most of their mass below the waterline.
  • Fencing, tree stumps and rocks can be covered by high water and form new shallow areas.

If you come across hazards while boating and have a radio onboard, use channel 16 (156.8 MHz) to warn other boaters. Key the radio, say PAN-PAN (pronounced pahn-pahn), followed by your warning message. This is the U.S. Coast Guard-approved procedure for reporting dangers to other boaters.
