50th Anniversary

Throughout 2007, Utah State Parks and Recreation celebrates 50 years of parks, recreation, and protection and preservation of natural and cultural resources.

Utah's state park system began with four heritage parks in 1957: The former Utah State Prison site in Sugar House (which was later removed from the system), Territorial Statehouse in Fillmore, This is the Place Monument in Salt Lake, and Camp Floyd near Lehi.

Today, there are 42 Utah State Parks and several undeveloped areas totaling 95,000 acres of land and more than one million surface acres of water. Utah State Park visitation has grown from an estimated 350,000 visitors in 1957 to nearly 4.5 million in 2005.

Utah State Park Rangers and staff are committed to ensure everyone has the opportunity to discover the diversity within Utah's state parks and museums.
